Our founding team is uniquely qualified to lead agriculturally centered developments in the Houston area. Centered on a close bond between the three brothers, each has excelled in their own area of expertise showing a passion and drive to be leaders in their respective fields. Being native Houstonians, they feel strongly about devoting their times, talents, and resources to shaping the type of Houston they want to see.
Thomas Garcia-Prats, Founder; General Manager
Tommy has over eight (8) years of hands on experience in farming and farm management. He has worked under some of the most innovative farmers in the country and hemisphere including: Rock Spring Farm a 20 acre certified organic farm in Decorah, IA known for its systems development and process-oriented operations; and Finca Bona Fide a 45 acre educational and mixed agroforestry farm in Nicaragua recognized in Central America as an innovator in regenerative farm design, mixed grain and perennial fruit production as well as on-farm education and training.
Tommy’s also leads the business’s community engagement component using his experience in community development and relationship building during his time in Nicaragua. Tommy is active in his immediate neighborhoods serving as the Business Representative on the 2nd Ward Super Neighborhood Council Board (#63) and various advisory committees related to 2nd Ward development and community feedback.
Daniel Garcia-Prats, Founder; Director of Operations
Daniel came to the farm with a B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Santa Clara University. He has three (3) years of experience as a Manufacturing Engineer in a Medical Device Startup in Silicon Valley and with a local oil and gas manufacturing firm. These have given Dan the hands-on training in production and manufacturing necessary to help develop the farm infrastructure both physical and operational. With certificates in Six Sigma and Lean, Dan has used his time developing and tweaking farm processes and documentation to create replicable and scalable systems that help the farm run smoother while collecting data and communicating responsibilities.
Lastly, his background in entrepreneurship developed in college and fostered within the startup world has made Dan the driving force behind Small Places’ long-term business vision, growth, and development separating Small Places from any other urban agricultural projects.
Mark Garcia-Prats, Founder; Director of Education
Mark has been leading the Education and Programming of the farm. He as a B.A. in English from Seattle University, a M.Ed from the University of St. Thomas and has spent eight (8) years as a teacher, principal and consultant. He has transformed the Farm’s education program from just a few gardening classes each season into a diverse and dynamic program that offers 15-20 classes a season with a variety of subjects connected to the tangents of food and the outdoors.
Mark has also taken an active role in developing the long-term vision and development of the business leading to his current pursuit of an MBA at the University of Houston’s Bauer College of Business with a focus in Finance: Commercial Real Estate.
